February 15, 2019 Washtenaw Community College

Washtenaw Community College鈥檚 submission to have a local chapter of the American Association of Men in Nursing (AAMN) has been accepted by the organization鈥檚 national board of directors.

The AAMN is an association dedicated to shaping the practice, education, research and leadership for men in nursing and the advancement of men鈥檚 health. The organization provides a framework for nurses to meet, discuss and influence factors which affect men as nurses. 黑料网鈥檚 chapter is the first community college chapter in Michigan.

Dean of Health Sciences Dr. Valerie Greaves supported a student suggestion to start a local chapter because she said the program鈥檚 鈥減rimary job is to support all of our students in any way we can.鈥

鈥淎nother role we play is filling the demands of the industry. There鈥檚 a movement in health care to better match the nursing workforce with the demographics of patients,鈥 Greaves added. 鈥淭he industry is seeking more minority nurses to better represent patients culturally, and it鈥檚 seeking more men to ensure male patients are well represented and that male healthcare needs are fully understood.鈥
